How often do I need to attend BNI events?

BNI members are expected to attend their weekly chapter business meeting. Unlike many networking groups that meet only occasionally, BNI is built around consistency because trust, credibility and referral opportunities develop over time rather than through one-off conversations.

Of course, BNI also understands that business owners travel, take holidays and have other commitments. If you’re unable to attend a meeting, you’re encouraged to send a substitute to represent your business, ensuring your seat – and your visibility – remain active within the chapter.

Trust is built through repetition

People rarely refer someone after a single conversation.

Trust develops through repeated interactions. Every time you attend a BNI event, your fellow members become more familiar with your business, your expertise and the type of referrals you’re looking for.

Weekly attendance also gives you the opportunity to meet visitors while continuing to strengthen relationships within your chapter. Even when you can’t attend yourself, sending a substitute helps maintain your business’s visibility.

Visibility creates opportunity

BNI membership operates like marketing. If you invested in a billboard, you’d want your message seen every day. Your weekly meeting rhythm works the same way. Showing up keeps your business front of mind and helps members recognise who you help and what a good referral for you looks like.

Preparation is key

Consistency gets you in the room. Preparation helps you make the most of it.

Walking into an event and “winging it” rarely creates memorable opportunities.

Members who invest time preparing for BNI beforehand generally communicate their value more clearly, deliver stronger weekly presentations and make it easier for others to recognise referral opportunities.

Before each networking event, ask yourself:

  • Who is my ideal client right now?
  • What story or example could help others recognise a referral opportunity?

Preparation not only shows professionalism, it also demonstrates respect for the time and commitment of everyone else in the room.

Small habits lead to bigger results

Successful networking isn’t built on one great conversation. It’s built through hundreds of conversations that develop credibility over time.

The strongest results in BNI usually come from members who show up consistently, prepare well and invest in relationships week after week. That’s why weekly attendance isn’t simply an expectation of membership – it’s one of the key reasons the model works.
